HELP US GROW!

NSEN has enjoyed steady growth since regaining seasonal staff capacity in 2020. The volunteer Board of Directors has enabled and steered this growth by managing high-level operations, overseeing staff projects, pursuing funding opportunities, and developing strategic plans for the future.

We are currently looking to fill one recently vacated seat on our Board of Directors to ensure that we can keep pace with the organization’s growth and take on new projects. We are seeking enthusiastic and diligent individuals to join our leadership team and support NSEN’s continued success!

 

Position Details

Any environmental non-profit or individual person can join the NSEN Board. We strive to have representation from across the province and from all backgrounds and experience levels!

  • Start date: As early as July 2026 or as late as September 2026

  • Location: Online with optional in-person events

  • Commitment: 4 - 7 hours per month (depending on capacity), including attendance at monthly board meetings (2 hours)

  • Positions available: 1

  • Eligibility:

    • Must be at least 16 years of age

    • Must be living in Nova Scotia

    • Must acquire an active NSEN membership (after joining the Board)

Tasks and Responsibilities

Board member roles can vary considerably according to the skills and interests of each individual. The ideal candidate would have expertise in online communications and graphic design. Other potential tasks and responsibilities include the following:

  • Working with staff to manage our website, social media, and newsletter

  • Attending monthly board meetings (mandatory)

  • Interfacing with NSEN member organizations across Nova Scotia

  • Planning fundraising events, networking events, and webinars

  • Applying for grants and funds for staff and projects

  • Planning and leading meetings with government representatives

  • Supporting and working with NSEN’s environmental caucuses

  • Meeting with our staff/volunteers and overseeing their projects

  • Developing internal policies and long-term strategies to guide NSEN's future

  • Brainstorming new initiatives and helping staff bring them to life

  • Representing NSEN in online and in-person meetings and forums

  • Using our data management software (Neon One)

  • Interfacing with other provincial environmental networks across Canada

Skills and Experience to Bring

We welcome any applicant with a positive attitude and a determination to learn and contribute! Bonus points for any of the following skills and experience:

  • Experience creating promotional graphics, newsletters, and social media posts

  • Experience working with environmental non-profit organizations

  • Written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Organizational skills

  • Project management

  • Strategic planning

  • Leadership, team management, task delegation

  • Grant writing, fundraising

  • Policy writing, legal expertise

  • Government relations

  • Event planning

  • Critical thinking

  • Conflict resolution

  • Writing reports and delivering presentations

  • Using online technology/software

  • An ability to get creative and brainstorm new ideas 

Skills and Experience to be Gained 

In addition to those listed above, NSEN Board members have opportunities to gain a variety of transferable skills and valuable experiences, such as:

  • Experience building bridges within the environmental movement

  • A vast array of knowledge about environmental issues/topics in Nova Scotia

  • A wide network of contacts in Nova Scotia's environmental sector

  • A sense of community and collaboration towards the common good

  • Technical experience with various software tools used across the non-profit sector
