Diocesan Environment Network

By Eleanor Willner-Fraser, NSEN Community Engagement Volunteer

The Diocesan Environment Network (DEN) is a network within the Mission, Outreach, Social Justice Task Group (MOST) of the Anglican Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Established in 2012, it has three coordinators and approximately 550 people connected to the network, most of whom are Anglicans and most of whom live in Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island. It also has members from different parts of Canada and other parts of the world and other faith traditions.

DEN’s mandate is to support Anglicans in living out the fifth Mark of Mission, “To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.” The Network also works to be a resource to groups and individual Anglicans within the diocese, to form connections with faith and secular groups, and to effect change on environmental issues. DEN supports and collaborates with a number of other groups.

DEN hosts several Zoom events each week, which are open to all—people of any faith and those of none. Starting on April 7th, they will have an online book study of Climate Church, Climate World on Wednesdays from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. On Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm, they host gatherings with different speakers and topics related to the environment. On Fridays at 9:30 am, they livestream a Morning Prayer about caring for Creation. DEN also runs an Ecological Grief Support Group once a month. Visit DEN’s website for more information about the events, including how to register.

On their website and a special Facebook group, you can also find the Hope & Inspiration Art Gallery, an online art show featuring the artwork of local artists who are DEN members. The gallery aims to encourage appreciation and stewardship of the earth. Other resources on the DEN website include videos, helpful links, and their weekly E-news. The newsletter contains information about upcoming events, resources, advocacy opportunities, and prayers.
